Solar Atlas Berlin – Pilot Project
The Roofs of Berlin – a New Source of Energy
Which roof is suited for the installation of a solar cell system? How much electricity could it generate? How large an investment will it entail? These are some of the questions addressed by the solar atlas created by Berlin Partner GmbH, a company established to promote the economy of Berlin, and to which it provides ‘three-dimensional’ answers.

Integrated into the 3D city model of Berlin, the solar atlas shows the solar potential given in the city, specifically for each individual building. Owners of, and investors in real estate will be able to find out here whether or not the roof of a building might be suitable for use as a source of solar energy, and whether or not such an investment would be sensible.

The 3D city model visualizes the solar potential, possible generation capacity, CO2 savings and investment costs. The program was initially realized in two pilot areas. 14,300 roofs of the city were evaluated in terms of their suitability as a source of solar energy. In the spring of 2010, the solar atlas is to be extended to cover all of Berlin.

On the Pilot Project
The pilot project shows the areas around Friedrichstrasse in the Eastern city center of Berlin (referred to as “City Ost”) and a residential area in Lichterfelde. Additionally, 30 locations relevant to the sector were also visualized – among them manufacturers of solar heating facilities and solar cell systems, institutions of higher learning and universities, research centers and associations and societies.

The atlas also shows 31 major existing facilities (fifteen solar cell systems, six solar heating facilities and eight buildings with a solar energy concept). A mouseclick on the images to enlarge them will reveal further details of the systems and facilities.

The pilot project was visualized both in three dimensions in the 3D city model of Berlin and in two dimensions for the online portal of the Berlin Business Location Center. Three variants of the atlas are available: one is a 2D web application (in german) free of any plug-ins, one is an internal 3D model and one is a public version integrated into Google Earth.

The solar atlas was created in cooperation with the Senate of Berlin, the SUN-AREA and virtualcitySYSTEMS.
